Here Is something for our long time and early residents of Costa Mesa. Photo taken sometime in the 1940s of downtown Costa Mesa of the intersection of Harbor Blvd and Newport Blvd. Alpha Beta market was located on Southwest corner of that intersection. Old location of the Post Office Is located just under the flag just south of Alpha Beta. Some of the old businesses at the time were the Huddle located between the Post office and the market.
Not sure if it was just a coincidence that a business of the same name would spring up on Baker Street. A sign at the corner indicates the distance to neighboring cities and another sign indicating two blocks to the Justice of the Peace. At that time Judge Donald Dodge was working out of his office at Balboa Street and Anaheim Avenue. Balboa Street no longer exists today after development years ago. It ran west from this location.
Donald Dodge was an important civic leader at the time and started in the area selling award winning apples from his orchard around 1915. Costa Mesa was quit well known for their delicious crops. He retired in 1959. The Costa Mesa sign in the middle of photo is very reminiscent to me as to the Bedford Falls sign from the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" A community that is so proud of its city. With that I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
